Strategic Planning Sets CANY Milestones

As a next step toward growing the ceramics and glass industry in New York State, CANY conducted strategic planning sessions February 11 and 12, 1999, in Albany, New York. These sessions were part of the larger CANY initiative outlined in the "Blueprint for the Ceramics and Glass Industry," which has been developed through a grant from the Empire State Development Corporation.

"Our goal in strategic planning is to continue the revitalization and growth process instigated by the Blueprint," noted Thomas J. Sonneville, CANY president. "There are tremendous opportunities for ceramic and glass industries in New York state, and our mission is to identify barriers to growth while developing initiatives to strengthen CANY and its constituent members."

Jointly sponsored by CANY and the CACT, the sessions were facilitated by John LaRocca, senior associate with the Rensselaerville Institute. Topics addressed during the two-day sessions included analysis of CANY's present status and role industrially; description of CANY customers, services needed, and services provided; and identification of future goals and directions.

"Strategic planning represents an important milestone in revitalizing CANY, portending future benefits to the entire New York State ceramics and glass industry," said Dr. L. David Pye, dean of the New York State College of Ceramics.

In addition to representatives from CANY and the CACT, participants were drawn from the NYS Science and Technology Foundation; Empire State Development Corporation; the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority; the NYS College of Ceramics; and affiliated NYS ceramics and glass industries, including Victor Insulators, Ferro-Transelco, Buffalo China, Silicon Carbide Products, Eastman Kodak, and Heany Industries.
