Ceramic materials have been produced commercially in New York State for nearly two centuries. After visiting many of the ceramics and glass plants in the state in 1932, Dr. Edward Holmes, then Dean of the New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University, began to plan for an association for the mutual benefit of the College and the industries. Thus, the Ceramic Association of New York (CANY) was officially chartered in 1933.
During the past decade, CANY has played an active role in recognizing outstanding high school students from across the state for their achievements in math and science in the form of merit awards. CANY has also sponsored numerous technical meetings on topics of interest to the ceramics and glass industry.
