Defining the future of New York State's ceramic and glass industries

What would the results be of an ``incredibly successful" effort to develop the ceramics and glass industry in New York State?

That's the question posed to industry leaders and members of the Ceramics Association of New York (CANY), which was charged with drafting a blueprint they hope will guide the industry into the next century.

Ambassador Charles Gargano, Commissioner of the NYS Department of Economic Development and President of the Empire State Development Corporation, asked CANY to prepare the industry blueprint for Empire State Development Corporation's Strategic Business Division.

Ceramics and glass represent an important component of the materials segment which the state has identified as one of New York's economic strengths.

The finished blueprint was presented to Empire State Development Corporation officials at a May 1997 program at the Omni Hotel in Albany. News

The statement:

``The ceramics industry in New York State is recognized globally as a world leader in high-value ceramic manufacturing. As an industry, it operates profitably in a business environment that promotes the growth of existing firms and the formation of new ones of all sizes. Its profitability generates sufficient capital wealth to allow for reinvestment at a rate to insure its position of leadership. The industry is undergirded by a vibrant educational and technical infrastructure. It is an industry that knows itself and its individual players; has an effective way of communicating with among all of its component players and has solid links to its customers and potential customers".
